Clapmob for Belarus

Event Date: Mon October 10 2011

Did you know that clapping in public is illegal in Belarus? It sounds like the set-up to a bad joke.  But the punch line is that 250 people really were arrested for clapping in public in Belarus in June 2011.

Belarus’ illegitamate government have denied people the freedom to say anything against their regime – so people have taken to simply standing and being silent in the streets and have even been arrested for that. One variation on the silent protest is that people spontaneously break out clapping (and again have been arrested for it).

Our intention is to echo this form of protest in solidarity with the Belarusian   people– using our democratic freedom of protest in this way to highlight their struggle.

Join us this Monday (10th October) we will be marking World Day Against the Death Penalty with a flashmob in Birmingham town centre, echoing protestors in Belarus (the last country in Europe to carry out Capital Punishment).  Meet at the Bullring bull statue at 6pm for a briefing of what we will do – the more the merrier, all you need to do to join in is be able to clap! The whole thing should take around one hour.
