Eyetoei is a charity event where Jon James and Matthew Waldron will canoe from the London Eye to the Eiffel Tower by sea kayak in aid of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Research and in the memory of Sue James. The 450 mile trip will begin on 28th May 2011 and take four weeks to complete. Jon and Mat hope to raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA)

About Sue James

Sue James is the reason Jon and matt are doing this trip. Sue was Jon’s mum and she is also his inspiration for enjoying life and seeking adventure. She was a hard working single parent of 3 children and her life was spent being positive and devoted while she found her own way in life hard. She loved all things exciting and fun and was happiest when doing things for others, or when spending time gardening which was the 2nd love of her life.  In the summer of 2007, at a time in her life when she was her happiest sue was diagnosed with motor neurone disease with which she fought a long and courageous battle. Together Jon and Mat, long time friends, whish to raise much needed funds to go towards the department that helped and had a personal relationship with Jon’s mum. And by doing this trip they will be remembering all the values she passed on to many, adventure – determination – strength – fun!

About MND

What is motor neurone disease, MND?
Motor neurone disease is a rare disorder that results in wasting and weakness of muscles due to damage to their nerve supply. The disease can affect the muscles of the limbs, the trunk, and speech, swallowing and breathing. The disease usually strikes in middle age, although can affect people of all ages. Once weakness begins, the disease usually progresses relentlessly. As yet there is no cure or treatment that greatly alters the course of the disease.
What causes MND?
Motor nerves are the largest and most metabolically active nerve cells in the body, and very many mechanisms have been proposed to account for their damage. It is likely that different combinations of these various mechanisms are important in different individuals with the disease.
Prospects for treatment
They, and several groups worldwide, are searching for compounds that will block several of the proposed toxic pathways. Gene therapy and stem cell therapy may be viable options for the future, but much further work is needed before clinical trials with these new approaches can take place.
For more information visit the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) website.

Their Trip

Their trip will officially begin on the river Thames up river from the London Eye, and from there they head towards the English Channel. The initial leg on the Thames is along a non tidal but busy section of the river, after that it’s onwards through the tidal sections to eventually arrive at mouth. They will then make their way around the coast to Dover where they will stop and prepare for the dangerous crossing of the English Channel. The distance from Battersea where they plan to start from and Dover is approximately 120 miles and will take four hard days kayaking. They must accomplish the crossing to Calais in one day as there are, obviously, no rest points in the channel. They will be escorted across the channel by a safety boat which will give them safe and legal passage in to France. From Calais they will navigate to Le Havre, where the Seine meets the sea which will see them traverse some 160 miles of French west coastland and then they will begin the difficult tidal section of the Seine to Amfreville, Fortunately there is a convenient canal section that will help miss the first leg of the tidal Seine. From there we will continue paddling up the Seine towards the end goal of beautiful Paris, which will be the longest section of the trip. They will then exit the water and head towards the nearest bar for probably the best tasting pint in a long while.
The whole trip should take approximately 4 weeks and is around 490 nautical miles.

Where we…the flash mobers come into this all!

Claire James is Jon’s wife and I am matt’s sister and we would like to give our boy’s (which we are so proud of) the best send off and raise as much media attention about this fantastic fundraiser as possible so we have decided to organise a flash mob to send them off! This will involve our choirs singing on mass seemingly spontaneously and some dance schools dancing to our songs!  If you are not sure of what a flash mob is or how it works please google and you tube it there are so many fantastic examples! Hopefully by performing like this we will be raising awareness about the boys epic journey and also raise the profile of the charity it will also be posted on you tube in order to keep the profile raised. We are also in talks with the TV show this morning about following the boys and some local news departments too so fingers crossed we can really get this out there!
I am not asking anyone to donate any money as just the time commitment and personal travel costs is more than I could wish for! if we can get 100 people involved it would be amazing! The more voices the better in this situation! The boys will set off at high tide and should be at the London eye after 11.30am so we will need to be in place and ready by then.

If you or your choirs would like to be involved we would love to come and teach the three songs we have prepared we will also be holding two rehearsal evenings at spaxton village hall a couple of weeks before the event.
Thank you for taking the time to read this email and I really hope you are able to join in with what I think will be a fantastically exciting singing opportunity!
please contact me for any information
many thanks mikala beer
