Description:
In close proximity to Borough Food Market, get together at Tabard Park and bring your own music and games too. A fantastic way to meet the rich variety of locals. Tabard Gardens is a local park close to River Thames and much used by local people as a green connecting route. It includes large grassy areas, a wildlife area, children’s play area and multi use sports pitches.
Bermondsey, A Rich Food History…
The area up until the Second World War were great centres of trade and industry. The wharfs along the River Thames and Surrey Docks on the Rotherhithe peninsula handled a range of goods. Tooley Street was known as ‘London’s larder’.
A roll-call of food processing industries grew in Bermondsey: Courage Brewery(chimney still present and now apartments) next to Tower Bridge, Cross and Blackwell in Crimscott Street, Hartleys Jam Factory in Rothsay Street, Pearce Duffs in Spa Road, Liptons on Rouel Road, Spillers (dog
food) and Peek Freans (first by St Saviour’s Dock, then on Drummond Road). The area also boasts the first food canning business in England.
You can see the massive supertall skyscraper, London Bridge Tower, nicknamed ‘The Shard’ is under construction at London Bridge Station.
To the north is the River Thames, London Bridge station and Southwark Cathedral. Bermondsey and Borough is a well-developed visitor attraction
and has grown in size. The adjacent units have been converted and form a gastronomic focus for London. Borough High Street runs roughly north
to east from London Bridge towards Bermondsey Square Farmers Market and further to the newer Maltby Street Food Market.
